Rebuilding Life After Treatment: Navigating Survivorship, Follow-Up Scans, and Long-Term Wellness

Completing active cancer treatment is a monumental milestone. For months or even years, your calendar has likely been defined by chemotherapy cycles, radiation sessions, doctor consultations, and hospital visits. Hearing that treatment is finished brings an immense wave of relief and joy.

However, many patients are surprised to discover that the transition into survivorship can also bring a mix of complex emotions. Rebuilding your routine, managing “scanxiety,” and adjusting to your new normal require patience, self-compassion, and proactive health strategies.

The Emotional Landscape of Survivorship

When active treatment ends, the constant safety net of daily or weekly medical oversight suddenly shifts. It is completely normal to experience:

  • The “Now What?” feeling: Moving from a high-intensity treatment schedule to an open schedule can feel jarring or disorienting.
  • Scanxiety: Anxiety leading up to routine follow-up scans or blood tests is one of the most common challenges survivors face.
  • Fear of recurrence: Wondering whether symptoms mean cancer has returned is a natural worry that gradually softens over time as you build distance from your diagnosis.

Be gentle with yourself. Healing involves your emotional well-being just as much as your physical recovery.

Navigating Follow-Up Care and Surveillance

Your cancer journey does not end with your final treatment session; it transitions into a structured survivorship phase. Follow-up care is critical to monitor your recovery and catch any potential issues early.

  1. Stick to Your Surveillance Schedule
  • Your oncologist will provide a personalized follow-up schedule detailing how often you need physical examinations, blood work, imaging scans (such as CT, MRI, or PET scans), or specialized screenings.
  • Keep these appointments religiously, even when you feel completely healthy.
  1. Know the Warning Signs
  • Educate yourself on the specific post-treatment symptoms or warning signs to watch out for depending on your original diagnosis.
  • Never hesitate to contact your care team if you notice persistent, unexplained symptoms between scheduled visits.
  1. Maintain a Centralized Health Record
  • Keep copies of your pathology reports, treatment summaries, surgical notes, and imaging results in a dedicated folder or digital file. This makes transitioning between specialists or seeking secondary opinions much smoother.

Long-Term Physical Wellness

Rebuilding your body after cancer treatment takes time. Focus on sustainable, long-term health habits:

  • Gradual physical activity: Rebuild your strength slowly with activities you enjoy, such as walking, gentle swimming, or yoga.
  • Balanced nutrition: Continue focusing on whole foods, lean proteins, fresh fruits, vegetables, and adequate hydration to support metabolic health.
  • Manage lingering side effects: If you experience chronic fatigue, neuropathy, or digestive adjustments, work with your medical team or specialized therapists to manage them effectively.

Embracing Your New Normal

Survivorship is not about returning to the exact person you were before your diagnosis; it is about moving forward with a renewed perspective, a deeper appreciation for your body’s resilience, and proactive health management.

Good cancer care begins with accurate information—and continues with personalized support at every step.

Cancer Free Fitness
16Sep

A cancer diagnosis and the subsequent treatments—such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery—often bring profound physical and mental exhaustion. Historically, patients were advised to rest completely and avoid physical strain. However, modern oncology research has changed this approach.

Today, clinical studies consistently show that safe, tailored physical activity can be a valuable part of supportive cancer care. Maintaining an active lifestyle under appropriate medical guidance can help preserve strength, support recovery, and improve overall quality of life.

The Science-Backed Benefits of Staying Active

When structured appropriately for an individual’s condition, exercise may offer important benefits across different stages of cancer care:

Combats Cancer-Related Fatigue: It may sound counterintuitive, but gentle physical activity can help reduce cancer-related fatigue and improve daily stamina.

Preserves Muscle Mass and Strength: Cancer and its treatments can contribute to muscle loss and physical deconditioning. Regular movement can help maintain strength, balance, mobility, and independence.

Enhances Mood and Mental Wellbeing: Physical activity can support emotional wellbeing and may help reduce anxiety, low mood, and some of the psychological stress associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Supports Treatment and Recovery: Appropriate physical activity may help patients maintain physical function during treatment and support recovery following surgery and other therapies.

The Golden Rules of Safe Oncology Exercise

Not every exercise is suitable for every patient. Before starting a new exercise routine, it is important to discuss it with your treating team. Keep these safety principles in mind:

1. Get Medical Clearance First

Your ability to exercise safely may depend on factors such as blood counts, bone health, current treatment, other medical conditions, and your surgical history. Speak with your oncologist, physiotherapist, or other appropriate healthcare professional before beginning a new exercise programme.

2. Start Low and Go Slow

Even if you were physically active before your diagnosis, you may not be able to return immediately to your previous level of activity. Begin with gentle, short sessions—such as a 10-minute leisurely walk—and gradually increase activity as your body and treating team permit.

3. Listen to Your Body

There is a difference between normal muscle tiredness and symptoms that require attention. Stop exercising and seek appropriate medical advice if you experience concerning symptoms such as chest pain, significant shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or unusual or severe pain.

Recommended Activities for Cancer Patients

Depending on your health, treatment and medical advice, suitable activities may include:

Walking: A gentle indoor or outdoor walk is one of the simplest ways to incorporate aerobic activity into your day.

Gentle Stretching and Yoga: Appropriate stretching or gentle yoga may help maintain flexibility, mobility and reduce muscle tension.

Light Resistance Training: Light resistance bands, weights or suitable bodyweight exercises may help maintain muscle strength and bone health when performed appropriately and, where necessary, under professional supervision.

Remember: Consistency Matters More Than Intensity

There will be days when treatment side effects make exercise difficult. Rest when your body needs it and avoid pushing yourself beyond what is medically appropriate.

Even a few minutes of gentle movement can be worthwhile. The goal is not to achieve athletic performance—it is to maintain function, strength and wellbeing as safely as possible during your cancer journey.

Always discuss significant changes to your physical activity with your treating oncology team, particularly during active cancer treatment or following surgery.

Can Diet Cure Cancer? What Cancer Patients Should Know About Food and Treatment

One of the most common questions patients and families ask after a cancer diagnosis is:

“Can changing my diet cure cancer?”

The simple answer is no—there is currently no scientifically proven diet that can cure cancer on its own.

However, this does not mean that diet is unimportant. Good nutrition can support your body during cancer treatment, help maintain strength and muscle mass, support recovery after surgery, and improve your ability to cope with treatment. The key is understanding the difference between supporting cancer treatment and replacing cancer treatment.

Can Food Kill Cancer Cells?

You may come across claims about particular foods, juices, herbs, spices or supplements that supposedly “kill cancer cells.”

Cancer is a complex disease. Treatment depends on factors such as:

  • Type of cancer
  • Stage of cancer
  • Location and size of the tumor
  • Pathology and tumor biology
  • Whether the cancer has spread
  • Overall health of the patient

Depending on the situation, effective cancer treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, or a combination of treatments. Diet can support these treatments, but should not be used as a substitute for them.

What Can a Healthy Diet Do During Cancer Treatment?

A well-planned diet can help you:

  1. Maintain muscle and body weight- Cancer and its treatment can sometimes cause loss of appetite, weight loss and muscle loss. Adequate protein and calories are important for maintaining strength and supporting recovery.
  2. Support recovery after surgery-After cancer surgery, your body needs nutrients to repair tissues and recover. Protein-rich foods, adequate calories, fluids, vitamins and minerals can all contribute to recovery.
  3. Help maintain energy-Eating regularly and choosing nutrient-dense foods can help prevent unnecessary weakness and fatigue.
  4. Support overall health-A balanced diet supports cardiovascular health, metabolic health and general wellbeing—important considerations throughout the cancer journey.

What Should a Cancer Patient Eat?

There is no single “cancer diet” that is appropriate for everyone. Your nutritional needs may change depending on the cancer, treatment, symptoms and whether you have recently undergone surgery. In general, a balanced diet may include:

  1. Protein:
Dal, beans, lentils, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken and other suitable protein sources.
  2. Vegetables and fruits:
Include a variety of vegetables and fruits as tolerated and as appropriate for your treatment.
  3. Whole grains and healthy carbohydrates:
Whole wheat, oats, brown rice, millets and other minimally processed carbohydrate sources can be useful.
  4. Healthy fats:
Nuts, seeds and appropriate amounts of healthy cooking oils can provide energy and essential nutrients.
  5. Fluids:
Adequate hydration is important, particularly during recovery and some cancer treatments.
  6. If eating is difficult because of nausea, mouth ulcers, difficulty swallowing, abdominal surgery or poor appetite, the diet may need to be modified.

Does Sugar Feed Cancer?

This is another common concern. Patients are sometimes told that completely avoiding sugar will “starve” cancer cells. The reality is more complicated. Cancer cells, like other cells in the body, use glucose for energy. Simply eliminating sugar from your diet does not selectively starve cancer cells while leaving normal cells unaffected. At the same time, eating large amounts of added sugar is not recommended as part of a healthy diet.

The goal should be overall nutritional quality and metabolic health, rather than extreme sugar restriction.

Should I Stop Eating Carbohydrates?

Usually, there is no reason for a cancer patient to completely eliminate carbohydrates unless specifically advised by their treating team for an individual medical reason. Carbohydrates can provide an important source of energy. Instead of following extreme diets, focus on appropriate portions and healthier carbohydrate choices such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes and other minimally processed foods.

What About Fasting or Keto Diets?

You may hear about fasting, ketogenic diets or other restrictive diets being promoted as cancer treatments. Research into specialized dietary approaches and cancer metabolism is ongoing. However, these approaches should not be assumed to cure cancer and may not be suitable for every patient. During cancer treatment, unnecessary dietary restriction can sometimes lead to inadequate calorie or protein intake and loss of muscle mass. If you are considering a highly restrictive diet, discuss it with your oncologist and, when appropriate, a qualified oncology dietitian.

What About Herbal Remedies and Supplements?

“Natural” does not automatically mean “safe” or “effective.”

  • Some herbal products and supplements may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, blood-thinning medicines or other medications.
  • Some may also affect the liver or kidneys.

Therefore, always tell your cancer treatment team about any:

  • Herbal medicines
  • Ayurvedic preparations
  • Supplements
  • Vitamins in high doses
  • Special powders or nutritional products

Do not stop or replace prescribed cancer treatment with an unproven remedy.

Can Diet Prevent Cancer?

Diet can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and may help reduce the risk of certain cancers, particularly when combined with other healthy habits.

Important preventive choices include:

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and other high-fiber foods
  • Limiting highly processed foods and excessive added sugar
  • Avoiding tobacco
  • Limiting alcohol
  • Staying physically active
  • Following recommended cancer screening

However, even people who follow a healthy lifestyle can develop cancer. Cancer prevention is about reducing risk—not guaranteeing that cancer will never occur.

What If I Have Already Had Cancer Surgery?

Nutrition becomes particularly important during recovery. After surgery, your nutritional requirements may change depending on the type of operation. Some patients may need:

  • More protein
  • Smaller and more frequent meals
  • Soft or modified foods
  • Additional fluids
  • Temporary nutritional supplements
  • Guidance for maintaining or regaining weight

For example, nutritional requirements after gastrointestinal surgery may be very different from those after breast or head-and-neck cancer surgery. Your diet should therefore be individualized to your treatment and recovery.

Don’t Let Fear Decide Your Cancer Treatment

A cancer diagnosis can make patients vulnerable to promises of miracle foods, special diets and “natural cures.” It is understandable to look for something you can control. Diet is one area where you can make positive choices—but it should complement evidence-based cancer treatment, not replace it.

There is no miracle food that can replace appropriate cancer treatment.

The most important step is to understand your diagnosis and discuss your treatment options with your cancer specialist.

Cancer Care Is About the Whole Person

Cancer treatment involves more than removing a tumor or giving medicines. It involves maintaining strength, managing symptoms, supporting nutrition, addressing emotional concerns and helping patients return to their normal lives as much as possible.

As a Surgical Oncologist, my approach is to combine evidence-based treatment with clear communication and compassionate care.

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with cancer and you are unsure about diet, surgery or the next step in treatment, do not hesitate to ask questions.

Good cancer care begins with accurate information—and continues with personalized support at every step.

A cancer diagnosis can bring fear, uncertainty and many questions. One of the first questions patients and families often ask is: “Which cancer specialist should I consult?”

If cancer has been diagnosed—or if investigations suggest that a tumor may require surgical treatment—a Surgical Oncologist (Cancer surgeon – oncosurgeon) can play an important role in evaluating the disease and planning the most appropriate treatment.

As a Cancer surgeon, I believe that cancer care should begin with clear information, careful evaluation and an individualized treatment plan. Surgery may be an important part of treatment for many cancers, but it is not appropriate for every patient. The decision depends on

  1. Type
  2. Stage
  3. Location
  4. Biology of the Cancer
  5. Patient’s overall Health.

What Is a Surgical Oncologist (Cancer surgeon – oncosurgeon)?

A Surgical Oncologist is a specialist trained in the surgical management of cancer.

Their role is not limited to performing an operation. A Surgical Oncologist evaluates whether surgery is appropriate, determines the extent of surgery required, considers how surgery fits with other cancer treatments, and helps guide the patient through recovery and follow-up.

Depending on the cancer, treatment may involve surgery alone or a combination of:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Hormonal therapy
  • Other systemic treatments

The treatment plan should be individualized for each patient.

When Should You See a Surgical Oncologist?

  1. After a Cancer Diagnosis

If a biopsy or other investigation has confirmed cancer, an early consultation with the appropriate oncology team can help you understand:

  • What type of cancer you have
  • Where the cancer is located
  • Whether it has spread
  • What stage the cancer is
  • Whether surgery is appropriate
  • Whether other treatments should be given before or after surgery

Receiving a diagnosis does not mean that you need to rush into surgery without understanding your options. A structured consultation can help you make an informed decision.

  1. When a Tumor May Be Suitable for Surgery

Many solid tumors can potentially be treated with surgery when they are localized or technically removable.

Examples may include selected cancers of the:

  • Breast
  • Head (tongue, buccal mucosa, lip etc.) and neck region (Thyroid, larynx etc.)
  • Oesophagus
  • Stomach
  • Colon and rectum
  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Pancreas
  • Skin and soft tissues
  • Kidney
  • Urinary bladder
  • Testis
  • Prostrate

Whether surgery is possible depends on individual circumstances. Imaging, biopsy results, staging and overall health all contribute to the decision.

  1. When Surgery Is Recommended as Part of Cancer Treatment

Some patients are advised to undergo surgery after evaluation by another specialist. A Surgical Oncologist can assess the proposed operation, explain the expected benefits and risks, and discuss alternatives when appropriate.

In some cancers, treatment may involve chemotherapy or radiation before surgery to reduce the tumor or improve the chances of successful treatment. In other situations, surgery may be the first major treatment.

  1. When You Need a Cancer Surgery Second Opinion

A second opinion can be valuable when you or your family are uncertain about a proposed cancer operation.

You may want another specialist’s opinion when:

  • Major surgery has been recommended
  • You are unsure whether surgery is necessary
  • More than one surgical approach may be possible
  • You want to understand alternatives
  • The diagnosis or treatment plan is complex
  • You simply want greater confidence before making an important decision

A second opinion is not about questioning your doctor. It is about making sure you understand your diagnosis and treatment choices.

Do All Cancer Patients Need Surgery?

No.

This is one of the most important things patients should understand. Some cancers are primarily treated with systemic therapy or radiation therapy. Some require a combination of treatments. Others may be best managed with surgery as a major component of treatment.

The decision depends on factors such as:

Cancer type + stage + location + tumor characteristics + overall health + previous treatment

Therefore, the right question is not simply, “Do I need surgery?”

It is:

“What treatment is most appropriate for my particular cancer, and what role does surgery have in that treatment?”

Why Individualized Cancer Treatment Matters

Two patients with the same type of cancer may not necessarily require exactly the same treatment.

Differences in:

  • Stage
  • Tumor size
  • Tumor location
  • Cancer biology
  • Age
  • General health
  • Previous treatments
  • Patient preferences

can influence the treatment plan.

That is why cancer care should not be based on a one-size-fits-all approach.

The Role of a Multidisciplinary Cancer Team

Modern cancer care often involves more than one specialist.

Depending on the diagnosis, your treatment may involve a:

  • Surgical Oncologist
  • Medical Oncologist
  • Radiation Oncologist
  • Radiologist
  • Pathologist
  • Oncology-focused dietitian
  • Other specialists when required

Working together can help ensure that the treatment plan addresses the cancer from different perspectives.

Don’t Let Fear Delay the Right Consultation

A cancer diagnosis can make patients feel overwhelmed. Some may delay consultation because they are afraid of surgery. Others may spend weeks searching online for alternative treatments or trying to decide which doctor to see.

The internet can provide useful information, but it cannot replace an individualized medical assessment.

The earlier you understand your diagnosis and available treatment options, the better prepared you can be to make informed decisions.

A SURGICAL ONCOLOGY CONSULTATION DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN THAT YOU WILL UNDERGO SURGERY. IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND WHETHER SURGERY HAS A ROLE IN YOUR TREATMENT AND, IF SO, WHAT THAT ROLE MAY BE.

Cancer Care With Clarity, Compassion and Confidence

Cancer treatment involves more than treating a tumor. It involves supporting a person and their family through one of the most challenging periods of their lives.

As a Surgical Oncologist, my approach is to combine clinical precision with compassionate, patient-centred communication. My goal is to help patients understand their diagnosis, ask the right questions and make treatment decisions without unnecessary fear.

For patients in Mohali, Chandigarh and the Tricity region, seeking timely specialist evaluation can be an important step after a cancer diagnosis or when surgery has been recommended.

Remember:

A cancer diagnosis is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a treatment pathway—and the right information can make that pathway clearer.

Take the Next Step

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, has been advised to undergo cancer surgery, or would like an expert opinion about available treatment options, consider discussing the case with a qualified Surgical Oncologist.

“Cancer substantially drains out the patients’ resources and badly cripples their finances. Decision regarding treatment of cancer is often avoided or delayed by some people due to unfounded notions, defective and incomplete information, hearsay and lack of awareness. Its deeply engrained myths mislead them further. All this makes the life of already distressed cancer patients more miserable.

People should shun myths and go in for early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Regular self-examinations, screening tests and check-ups by Oncologists will help in a long way in treating cancer.

Cancer is not contagious and does not infect the other person even if the other person stays near or with a cancer patient.

Some people are afraid of taking cancer treatment at an older age. In fact, old age is not an impediment in cancer treatment. It is the patient’s general health condition and his performance status which determine his suitability for cancer treatment at an old age.

Even if there is no family history of any cancer, one still can get cancerous disease as cancer could be caused due to many other factors such as pollution, unhealthy life style, smoking, drinking, pesticides, chemicals etc.

It is a misconception that biopsy spreads all cancers to other parts of body. In fact, most cancers do not spread from biopsy. Only a few cancers in early stage spread with biopsy.

With medical advancements; now new medicines and supportive treatment are given to manage and lessen the severity of side effects of cancer treatment more effectively than before.

Advancements in medical science have significantly increased the survival time in cancer patients. Some cancer patients live reasonably long life and may die from other causes or diseases like heart disease, lung disease etc. rather than from cancer itself, he asserted.
